Shibetsu Salmon Museum: #1 Place to see salmon in Japan

An aquarium where you can see salmon up close at each stage of its life cycle, from young fish, to adults swimming upstream and laying eggs.

This aquarium showcases the greatest number of different species of salmonid fish of any aquarium in the country.

Besides salmon, it features other fish living around Shibetsu.

As soon as you enter, you encounter the largest tank, the Seawater Tank.

Not just salmon though - you can see flounder and other Shibetsu fish species swimming to and fro.

From there, the “Fish Road” Tank exhibit changes according to the stage of the salmon’s life cycle.

In September and October, a fish way connects to Shibetsu River.
You can observe chum salmon and pink salmon swim upstream right in front of you. In November, they spawn, and from February to May you can see approximately 10,000 juvenile chum salmon make their journey to the sea.

Be sure to come to Salmon Park, the symbol of the salmon town, Shibetsu.

Our recommendation!

The sturgeon “finger-sucking” experience corner

Our most popular experience, getting your fingers “eaten” by sturgeons. Since sturgeons don’t have teeth, it’s OK to get bitten! Anyone, anytime, can try it.
